Inpatient & Outpatient: What and why?

 Katharine Alfond

A large part of the probation process is rehabilitation and treatment. Most offenses in probation require some sort of inpatient or outpatient treatment. Many of Ms. Jimenez's clients are subjected to be in some sort of program.

I have visited four of these treatment centers, and have heard and researched many more.

In this blog I am going to go over some of the treatment centers I have visited.

#1 Shannon's Hope

I went with Ms. Jimenez to Shannon's Hope to check in on a client who had moved in earlier that day. Shannon's Hope is a safe residence home for women who are struggling. Most patients are either homeless, need drug treatment, therapy, or aid with any mental illnesses. A positive and unique aspect of SH is that these woman are allowed to board with their children (if cleared by CPS). There are all sorts of accommodations for the children, such as a big backyard with a playground, books, toys, etc. There is a big community table, where all the woman gather and eat together every night. Each day, chores are completed (cooking, cleaning, laundry, etc), training mothers and women how to reintegrate themselves and have a positive shift when they have completed their treatment.

My favorite part of Shannon's Hope, was in the basement of the home, there is a "store". Full of food, clothing, hygiene products, school supplies, toys, etc. This "store" had anything your local target would have, and the kindest part, is that all of these items were donated! It is really refreshing and restoring to see citizens work together to assist those who are in urgent and vital need of it.

After Shannon's Hope, we went to Whitian House. This is an outpatient treatment center for Specialized Substance Abuse and Dual Diagnosis Treatment, as well as provides groups for struggling citizens.

Some of the groups offered are

- DUI Education & Treatment

- Approved Male & Female - Specific Domestic Violence

- Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT)

- Relapse Prevention Skills (RPS)

- Strategies for Self Improvement & Change (SSC)

- Cognitive Behavioral Therapy

- Sex Offenders

These groups are a massive key in recovery due to the support system they provided.

All together, treatment centers are very very important in helping somebody on probation achieve their treatment plans, and without having strong and reliable system behind them.
